Working From Home; Every Pro Has A Con

Posted by Matt Roberge on Apr 12, 2011 1:12:00 PM

I have been working from home for over five years now and have realized that every upside of working at home also has a downside.  In a recent blog post I asked the question, is working from home for you?  In this post I will explain why every pro of working from home has a con.  Suggestion: as you read this post feel free to sing Poison's classic song "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" to yourself.  Replace the word rose with pro and thorn with con so the verse reads "every pro has its con."

No Commuting -

Pro: Not having to commute to work certainly can be nice.  Homer Simpson pretty much summed it up perfectly when he was working from home; "I pity those fools on the freeway.  Gas, brake, honk.  Gas, brake, honk. Honk, honk, punch.  Gas, gas, gas."

Con: You work a lot and usually start working right away.  My office is right next to my bedroom.  I get up, put on some clothes and turn my office light and computer on...then I make coffee.  This becomes routine and sometimes not the best one to fall into.  It is very easy to get caught up in work and forget to take a break, eat, shower etc.

You are your own boss -

Pro: You do call the shots and make your own schedule.  It is really nice to have the flexibility to live your life the way you want to.

Con: If you are not disciplined you may not be very successful.  It is very easy to blow off work to do something else.  Your career may be very short lived if you don't have the proper discipline.

No co-workers to deal with -

Pro: Some people can be very annoying to work with and may make you less productive.  When working at home you can create your own working environment just the way you like it.

Con:  It can get awful lonely. Some people that start working from home find that they miss the daily office interaction.

It's your office -

Pro: You get to set up your office the way you want with the equipment you want.

Con:  It can get expensive. In most cases you pay for all of your expenses or at least some of them depending on the agreement with your employer.  You buy all of the equipment and pay all of the bills that go along with running an office.  In addition to that when something goes wrong it's up to you to fix the problem as most people that work from home can't afford a tech support department.

The list can go on and on.  All in all I love working at home; I just thought I could make some points for anyone that thinks that working at home only has positives and no negatives.
