When adding an expense in QuickBooks Online, have you ever noticed that little box on the right-hand side labeled “Class”? Ever wondered what it was for? It’s actually a pretty handy organizational tool if you know what to do with it. The Class field allows you to tag or label transactions that you wish to track in their own custom reports. If used properly, creating Classes will allow you to organize special expense items and break them down separately from your regular expense categories. However, if you don’t organize your Classes properly, you might wind up with just a jumble of extra labels that aren’t much help for anything.

Class Tracking in QuickBooks is a great tool that can be used by small business owners to help them take their revenue tracking and marketing efforts to the next level.  If used correctly, it can
produce some eye opening moments.  There are various ways to use class tracking and one of those methods that I feel is highly relevant is revenue tracking.  Tracking the sources of your revenue can show a lot of valuable info and may shed some light on where marketing efforts should be focused.  Are networking efforts paying off, are inbound marketing campaigns resulting in revenue, or are word of mouth referrals producing a surprising amount of revenue?  These are questions that can easily be answered with a few clicks of a mouse if the proper bookkeeping techniques are put in place and Class Tracking is used in QuickBooks.

Using Classes in QuickBooks

The class feature in QuickBooks can be a valuable and useful tool if used properly.  I feel that class tracking is one of the most under utilized tools in QuickBooks.  I think that the reason this feature is not used more often is because the general QuickBooks user does not understand what the class tracking feature is or what it can do for their business.
